I Actually stayed in Picayune for the storm and drove through the city after the storm to see the aftermath. We did not leave until Tuesday afternoon. I no longer have comunication with home but can tell you about the town's damage. Beginning on Hwy 43S which is where my home is the highway was blocked due to trees most of the houses where fine with the exception of lost shingles on the roof and trees that are fallen on the houses. There is no gas in the town a few stores have opened but only to sell drinks and cigarettes. The town is still standing sort of the sides of speedy oil change is ripped off there was a van thrown through the front of delta world tire. Don's seafood is completely demolished you might as well say its gone. Celular south next to movie gallery is also gone. the roof is torn off of the old premier furniture and all of the dollar stores had broken glass and most of there stuff stolen by luders. Other than that all of our schools on town are fine and main street across the tracks by city hall looks great as if nothing ever happened. please lets work together to keep things posted so that we may know when power may be restord. thank you

We just moved from Picayune to Tampa, and have loved ones who stayed in their homes through the hurricane. Some we have heard from, and some we have not. They have about two days supply of food, water, diapers, ect. We were told the power was being worked on as far as the Convelecent Home,Radio station and Walmart first. No gas available. And they are having to stand watch at night to keep others from stealing gas out of their cars. We would like to head there, but there is a shortage of gas here in Tampa. And may go in the future days to come.

Saturday, September 3.
This is regarding Peter and Lisa McCammon, who live in on Nellie Burks Road in Carriere. Their families have not heard from them since the storm, but a neighbor of theirs drove out and contacted us on 9/2. The neighbor reported that she had not heard of any injuries or deaths in that area. She said there are many trees down and some damage to structures, but no standing water and that most houses came through intact. She said roads were in the process of being cleared, but of course there is still no power or phone service.

Just to let people know.
If you plan to try to come to Picayune, make sure you bring enough gas with you to make the return trip. Services are very sparse, and we barely made it out without running out of gas. We found some in East Tuscaloosa, Al.
By the way, Don's Seafood only had minor damage, it was Morgan's that lost all the metal off of their roof. Most people were OK but if you have loved ones that stayed you may consider making a trip to rescue them because conditions are bad and are getting worse. Remember, no gas! Thank you Suzanne
God Bless,
Kraig

Just located this:

http://www.picayune.ms.us/

September 2, 2005
I spoke with the Picayune Police late last night. They have finally been able to established mobile phone communication with Nextel. They also were able to connect to the Internet. The situation in Picayune is one of wind damage to trees/roofs and some minor flooding in those areas that usually flood during heavy rains.

There were NO REPORTED WIDESPREAD INJURY OR DEATHS. The police were just able to reestablish communications, so we should have more information soon. Fuel is the main problem right now.... there is no electricity to pump the fuel and those stations that have generators are empty.

A few buildings sustained major damage - Crosby Hospital has severe roof damage, along with the Rexall Drug shopping center near the police station and the Cellular South building on Memorial.

WalMart is OPEN using large generator trucks. The water supply in the City was OK as of last night. It will be several weeks before electricity can be restored to the City and even more for the outlying areas. The New Home Depot, which was in the final stages of completion/stocking, opened early to supply the residents with needed hurricane supplies.

I understand that Hide-A-Way Lake sustained major tree damage and spoke to a resident who evacuated and said wind damage to homes she could see in HAWL was not severe; except for tree damage to homes. My roof in HAWL could be seen, but the downed trees down prevented viewing my house. I hope that is good news. I also found out that my business, located in the Sears Building on Hwy 11, looked fine. This building is a 4 year old, large, one-story metal building.

I wish I knew more.... and will update as soon as possible from my location in Vicksburg. I feel the situation is one of needing FUEL, food, water (in some cases) and getting the power grid back up. Of course there will be the need for major clean-up from downed trees.

Note: The above was NOT written by me. I just found it and thought it was such good news that I should post it on this blog. I lived in Picayune "59 and '60 and still have relatives living there.
Aloha from Hawaii,

Pete Martinez

Email me, Tom Shoemaker, at redwalkerdj@earthlink.net

What is the current situation like in Picayune (9/3/05)? Is it getting better or worse? Do we need to drive down from Columbus, Ohio to get her? Is that feasible?

Please help, we are extremely worried.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you for setting up this site.

Warren McGahagin (Florida) is searching for any information on the residents of Walkiah Bluff living there in the late 1970s. We lived on the Bluff five years and made many dear friends. We are especially seeking info on Buster, Bill, Tom and their families. If they survived, our prayers are answered. If they need help in recovering, we will help in any way we can.

I am wondering if anyone has heard how long is it will be before we get power and schools can open back up? Please post ANY time period thrown out by local government, even if it is a wild estimate. Thanks, Scott

Has anyone heard anything from PRC schools on when they think the kids will be able to go back to school? Also, what kind of time are we looking at for electric to areas outside of the Picayune City limits?
Thank you!

Spoke to family in Picayune today, water, ice and MRE's are being passed out but limited, gas is VERY limited the Picayune Police Dept is up and going 601-798-7411, MDOT.com can tell you about the roads. HAWL has some major damage and some minimal. Most phones are still down with no incoming or outgoing LD, some cell phones work but seems to be outgoing only no electricity at all outside of the city but within some parts do have electricity, natural gas and city water. FEMA and red cross have arrived so some relief is there but many supplies are still needed.... diapers formula, bottled water... GAS GAS GAS!!! I59 is open to the LA state line but not further. 11 is open, but only through town i think. if you come bring enough gas to sustain you because for the most part you would have to drive to Jackson to refuel. Will update more when i have info. can be contacted @ pheenixmoon@new.rr.com about Penton, Kellar, or Fleming families

My parents rode out the storm in HAWL. They say it is completely devastated, although they were very lucky. HAWL has water occasionally, as does Picayune.

Someone asked for a rough estimate on power... My parents wild estimate for power is 4 weeks minimum, although they say the crews are working so hard.

At 9:28 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Another thing, my parents say that Convoy of Hope has been doing wonderful things for Picayune and that they arrived a day or so after the storm. These people are in the HOPE business - distributing truckload after truckload of water and ice.

Message from the daughter of a Hide-Away-Lake resident:

"I heard from my Mom late yesterday. A friend of theirs has a working cell phone. They are well, but did say there is a great deal of damage in Hide-a-Way Lake due to down trees. They are being told it could be up to 3-4 months before electricity is restored. They intend to stay as long as
they can as they still have a generator. Gas is slowly becoming an issue. No real damage to their home other than the 3 trees leaning on it, but luckily no leaks have resulted. They did indicate that the Wal-Mart, Home
Depot and Winn Dixie are open for business."

I just spoke with my husband's nephew, who is a fireman, was able to get thru to his firestation. He said the town is NOT destroyed as some people have reported......lots of damage, trees, etc. Power gradually getting back on in town, some phones working, cell and land. I had read on some forums that schools, downtown, etc. destroyed. He said that is not true. He said supplies coming in every day, started early with the Convoy of Hope. Wal-mart, home depot operating. Big problem with gas as it is in most other places. No deaths or severe injuries from the storm. Mobile homes faired pretty good, he had not seen any destroyed or blown off foundations.
I am sure lots of reports have been exagerated.
Hope this helps ease minds.

I left on Wednesday after the storm. On Tuesday we took a tour in the coutry east of Picayune Union Baptist Church in Salem seemd OK. People lined up for gas at Salem gas station. Trees were down on road but could get past. We took Union Road to Ceasar Rd and most destruction was trees down. We saw an occasional house destroyed but it looked like tornado damage. We heard the tornadoes during the storm but luckily they missed us on Goss Rd. WE drove I59 from exit 10 to 4 and had to dodge downed trees. We drove up to the Catholic Church which had the metal roof off and checked the Episcopal church which was OK.
On Wednesday I went from exit4 I59 to I12 to Texas with no problems Electricity was out as far as Hammond LA.
Electricity will be a long time coming to the coutryside. The trees took out poles all over the place. Stay where you are for now.

This is the third time I've tried this; please forgive me if I've actually posted multiple messages. I'm writing from Athens, GA. I'm trying to find out if people who don't live in Picayune can go there and pick up Picayune residents to evacuate them. My fiance is there and I know my family could get enough gas and transportation to move him and his family out, but I don't know if we're allowed through. Friends here have offered their homes as well. He is Bradley Stockstill and I can't just sit here doing nothing; I'm trying to reach him and help in anyway I can. If someone can tell him, maybe we can arrange a way to meet him halfway between Athens, GA and Picayune. God bless all those who are helping; God is still in control and will cause all things to work together for good.

She said the neighbors were having daily cookouts and there was an ice truck delivering ice daily. Praise God for the internet and wonderful people who take the time to help out.

They are in the process of gathering items to send as soon as next week from what I'v been told. Maybe you should post what everyone is in real need of and I will direct those in charge to this site. Good Luck!!

LOOKING FOR MY MOTHER
CAROL CUTRER ON SALEM RD IN PICAYUNE. Since she lived in a mobile home she went to stay with a friend, but did not give us their name. their number was 601-749-3828. when I call, it says all circuits are busy. maybe someone locally could get through.
Thanks to person that posted police dept phone number. 601-798-7411 I was able to get through, but they will not search for someone unless they are critically ill. They said there were no deaths, so basically everyone is ok.
If she gets this message, my number 270-469-5651 family members are willing to come and get her if needed.
thanks, Juanita

HAWL info. I spoke with my mother Sharon Hardwick, who lives at 109 Millbrook Lane in Hideaway Lake. She said that all of the houses on Millbrook Lane are still standing, some have wind/tree damage, and at the time she left the power and water was still out.

Convoy of Hope in Picayune.

Go to http://www.ky3.com/ and look for several video links of what's happening through Convoy of Hope. I'm almost certain I saw my brother helping distribute ice and water at the parking lot of the old Walmart.

The reporter's name to search under is Jerry Jacobs, I think.

Suzanne and all my friends in the Picayune area:
I am living near Lafayette, Indiana - have been for the past three years, and my heart goes out to everyone there. I have stayed in touch with the Holcombs and McDonalds and a few others in the area. I spoke with Shawn Holcomb at the fire station two days ago when their phones were back up, and know that thankfully Pearl River County had no fatalities but is having a very tough time of it without power, especially the sick and elderly. I want to help by organizing a convoy of supplies from here to there, and perhaps other means. Please post on the blog what your greatest needs are. I was told water, food, ice, generators (and gasoline to run them), and medicine. What kind of medicine? I know of three phones that work - the fire station (atleast station 1), the police station and WRJW. Any other phones working? If so, please post numbers. Any churches have working phones?

Anyone who can call me is welcome to at:
765-714-4288 (cell), 765-572-1132 (home), 765-420-5243.

Just got off the phone with John at WRJW and he said they're starting to get some power back in Picayune, but things are still very rough in the outlying areas.

We stayed for the storm in Westchester but got out on Wednesday and conditions were deplorable, but I was able to get through on the phones today to my friend, Rudi Smith, and she said things are much improved today. Meals, water, ice, and some gas available now in town. Some power restored, and my phone call was the first she had received, so she has phone service now. She had been to my house to check on my cats but couldn't find them :(
She was told schools in Picayune would start back up around October 1, so we're staying here in Dallas until then.

Thanks Suzanne for this Blessed website.
Heard from my Mother, Georgiana Thorman this morning, she lives in "Westchester Heights" subdivision. She said all are well in her neighborhood. They have water. Also as far as she has heard there are NO FATALITES in Picayune.Phones are being restored, they have water in that town, and just alot of wind damage.
Thier truck has a huge oak laying on it and her home, so my parents can't really leave their neighborhood to check on others. And of course No power to go online. She did say the town is teaming with numerous resources helping all the areas citizens. Basicaly this area doesn't know the scope of the devestation around them.

Go to this TV station in Jackson online where they have been covering our area. Lots of videos and info with survivors forum also.

www.WLBT.com

or this station in Springfield, Missouri who were the first to aid Picayune with water and ice. They have videos, and you might recognize some of your family.
